Welcome to my ED403 Page
I am Avikesh Kumar, an ED403 student in semester 1 2023, and a member of Arisotle Group. I graduated with a BSCGCEd in Mathematics and Physics in 2008 followed by Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics in 2012 from the region's premier University, The University of the South Pacific. I was awarded a gold medal in 2012 for being the most outstanding postgraduate student at the Faculty of Science, Technology, and Environment (FSTE) now known as the School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics ( STEMP). I am expecting to graduate with a Master of Science in Mathematics in the September 2023 Graduation Ceremony at Laucala Campus.
I started as a Mathematics and Physics Teacher at Laucala Bay Secondary School in 2008. In 2013, I joined the College of Foundation Studies as a Teaching Assistant and was promoted to Coordinator for Pre-Degree Mathematics in 2018. Ever since then, I have been engaged with the foundation mathematics courses at Pacific TAFE. In January 2023, I migrated to New Zealand and took a teaching position at a prominent school in New Zealand.
Together with the ED401 and Ed402 courses, the ED403 learning journey has been an exciting one with a lot of new things to learn when teaching higher-level students.
This PGCTT program has transformed me into a better educator in terms of curriculum design, Open Education resources, digital tools, and incorporating technology into lessons when dealing with mature learners in an online space.
I hope you enjoy navigating my ED403 page and please leave a comment for me to further improve my e-portfolio.
Thank you
Avikesh

My Teaching Philosophy
My Reflection on ED403 Course
Dear All
First of all, hearty congratulations to everyone for successfully completing the PGCTT program. Although we worked with different groups, together, we did it. Well done.
Being from a Mathematics background, initially, I found it very boring reading those long readings and contributing to the weekly discussion forums for the program. The interesting weekly topics for discussion posted by the course coordinator made sure we all contributed towards this and made links with the course we are engaged in our respective areas of teaching. Indeed, it was a good learning experience knowing the best practices for colleagues in other disciplines and seriously thinking of their relevance to my course. Upon completing this PGCTT, I have gained a lot in terms of dealing with mature students, and their learning needs, designing and implementing curriculum, trying and testing teaching pedagogies, integrating digital tools and technologies, blending social media into lessons, predicting the future of education, and how educators need to prepare for those upcoming changes, especially in the direction of e-learning and e-assessment.
The education system is undergoing numerous changes especially the way courses could be offered in the future. I believe it was the right time for me to learn this from the PGCTT program and revise my teaching philosophy which prepares me to become and better educator in the future. One aspect of learning from this program I would like to include in my course is the good use of OER in my lessons. Learning about the license types and what can be done with each license type is definitely going to help me improve in integrating OER into my lessons.
Overall, I believe that our Bachelor’ or Master’s degree ensures we are up-to-date with our subject area, however, a program like PGCTT teaches how we can deliver our content to our students that best suits them. Although if we are really good in our subject area, if we are not able to deliver well to our students, the whole teaching and learning will fail. Hence, in my opinion, every educator involved in HE should take up this program so that our students can receive the best from us as educators. At last, special thanks to our Course Coordinator, Dr. Shikha Raturi for putting the best content into this program to help us understand the needs of students at HEIs. Thank you Farid, Rishneel, and Devika for those discussions during assessment due dates making sure we all submit it before the due date. My best wishes to everyone for their future.
