Year 3 Semester 2: What are my strengths that will help me after I graduate?
Rationale: Building on the work in the previous semester to consider what personal knowledge and skills might be required for a career in industry or the public service.
- Assess yourself using SFIA skill definitions (both generic and specialist) at level 3.
- Revise your document from first semester explaining your assessment.
- Locate and link to artefacts as evidence in support of your assessment.
Commitment: 7.5 to 15 hours.
Reflection
As part of my Bachelor of Software Engineering studies at USP, I am continue to develop my CS001 ePortfolio . This semester’s focus is to assess my strengths using the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) at Level 3, identifying the personal and professional skills that will support my career after graduation.
The SFIA framework defines both Generic and Specialist skills that describe levels of responsibility, autonomy, influence, complexity, and knowledge in professional work. Through reflection and self-assessment, I have identified my current strengths and areas for further growth.
Generic Skills (SFIA Level 3)
Under the generic skill categories, I believe my key strengths include:
-
Collaboration and Communication: I am able to work effectively within a team, sharing ideas clearly and contributing to discussions to achieve common goals.
-
Creative and Analytical Thinking: I enjoy finding innovative solutions to problems, especially during debugging and software design.
-
Planning and Organisation: I can manage my workload efficiently, set achievable milestones, and meet deadlines consistently.
-
Adaptability: I have learned to adapt quickly to new tools, technologies, and working environments.
These skills are important as they will enable me to function effectively in professional environments that require teamwork, communication, and self-management.
Specialist Skills (SFIA Level 3)
In terms of specialist skills, I have developed the following through my coursework and projects:
-
Software Development: Proficient in languages such as Java, Python, C#, HTML, CSS, and SQL.
-
System Design and Testing: Understanding of database structures, user interfaces, and software testing principles.
-
Version Control and Collaboration Tools: Experience using Git, GitHub, and Visual Studio Code for collaborative development.
-
Problem Solving and Debugging: Skilled at identifying errors and implementing efficient solutions.
These specialist skills align with SFIA Level 3 expectations, where I can apply my technical knowledge to well-defined tasks with some guidance, showing increasing autonomy and accountability.
Reflection and Future Development
I believe my strengths—particularly my problem-solving mindset, adaptability, and communication—will be valuable as I enter the professional world. My goal after graduation is to continue developing my specialist technical skills while enhancing leadership and project management abilities to progress toward higher SFIA responsibility levels.
Artefacts (evidence to show accomplishment of learning outcomes)
the above project was based on an HR management system, which required the collaboration of the team members and stakeholders to properly identity what was required to develop the system
each branch represented a different version of the project also has different features with tests implemented.
