Planning

Year 4 Semester 2: What is my plan for the future?

Rationale: Distilling all the work completed previously, to look to a future after graduation and develop a plan leading to a decided professional outcome.

  • Consider again the type of job you might be interested in doing after you graduate and identify again SFIA skills and professional attitudes that might be relevant.
  • Revise your document from first semester and locate new or different artefacts as evidence in support of your assessment.
  • Identify skills that you do not have but which you think are necessary for your type of job and write a plan of how you will acquire the skills.

Commitment: 10 to 20 hours.

Reflection

As I near the end of my Bachelor of Software Engineering, I have begun planning my professional path for the next few years. My current focus is to work as a Software Developer, gaining strong technical experience in coding, backend systems, and automation. Over the next five years, I aim to transition into more advanced roles such as Data Engineer, Project Manager, and Automation Engineer, while gradually developing my own tech startup in Fiji.

Current Professional Profile (SFIA Level 3 – Apply)

At present, I operate at SFIA Level 3, where I can apply my skills independently and take responsibility for achieving assigned outcomes. My Generic Skills include:

  • Autonomy: I take responsibility for my work and manage priorities effectively to deliver tasks on time.

  • Influence: I collaborate confidently with peers and mentors to improve project outcomes.

My Specialist Skills include:

  • Software Development (PROG): I can design, code, and test applications using multiple programming languages.

  • Data Management (DATM): I have developed and maintained data pipelines and databases through my ELT Data Warehouse Project.

  • Automation (AUTO): I’m developing foundational skills in automation and system integration.

Future Professional Profile and Goals

In the next 4–5 years, my goal is to progress into a Project Manager or Automation Engineer role. I aim to lead technical projects, manage teams, and build solutions that integrate Automation, AI, and Machine Learning to streamline processes for businesses in Fiji. My long-term ambition is to launch my own automation-focused startup that provides data-driven business solutions.

Skills to Develop

To reach this level, I plan to:

  • Deepen my knowledge of Automation Technologies (RPA tools, scripting, workflow orchestration).

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of AI/ML to integrate intelligent automation in projects.

  • Strengthen my Data Analysis and Entrepreneurship skills to combine technical insight with business strategy.

  • Pursue certifications or postgraduate studies in Project Management (PMP) and Data Engineering

    Market and Business Outlook

My primary market focus is Fiji, where there is growing demand for automation, data engineering, and local software solutions. By developing a strong technical foundation and business mindset, I aim to contribute to Fiji’s technology sector by offering scalable automation solutions tailored for Pacific enterprises.
