Professionalism

Year 4 Semester 1: What professional capabilities do I need and what professional capabilities do I have?

Rationale: Building on the work the previous year, to consider what personal knowledge, skills and attitudes might be required for a career as a professional.

  • Consider the type of job you might be interested in doing after you graduate.
  • Identify SFIA skill definitions (both generic and specialist) at level 3 that might be relevant to the type of job.
  • From your experiences in your project or work in industry, consider what attitudes additional to your SFIA skills you might require to be considered a professional.
  • Revise your document from second semester last year identifying the skills you have, and the skills and attitudes you need to acquire, for the job you might be interested in doing after you graduate.
  • Locate artefacts and link to them as evidence in support of your assessment.

Commitment: 10 to 20 hours.

Reflection

As I approach the completion of my Bachelor of Software Engineering at USP, I have started to reflect on the professional capabilities and attitudes I possess and those I need to further develop to succeed in my future career. I am particularly interested in roles such as data engineer, software developer, project manager, backend developer, automation engineer, and data pipeline specialist. These roles demand both strong technical expertise and professional behavior consistent with SFIA Level 3 – Apply.

Current Professional Capabilities (What I Have)

According to the SFIA Level 3 framework, I demonstrate several generic skills that align with this level of responsibility:

  • Autonomy: I work with minimal supervision and take responsibility for completing assigned tasks effectively. My ability to plan and meet deadlines has consistently helped me deliver projects on time.

  • Influence and Communication: I can communicate technical ideas clearly within my team and influence decisions during discussions and planning.

  • Leadership: I naturally take the lead in group projects, guiding team members, delegating tasks, and ensuring everyone contributes to meeting project objectives.

In terms of Specialist Skills, I have developed:

  • Software Development: Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, SQL, and Node.js for backend systems.

  • Data Engineering: Hands-on experience designing ETL pipelines using Python and SQL Server.

  • Automation: Building scripts and workflows to improve system efficiency and reduce manual processes.

These strengths demonstrate my readiness to apply technical and soft skills to structured work environments.

Professional Capabilities Needed (What I Need to Develop)

To progress towards a successful career in data and software engineering, I aim to strengthen the following:

  • Advanced Data Systems Knowledge: Expanding my understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and big data tools (Airflow, Spark).

  • Project Management: Gaining professional certification (such as PMP or Scrum) to manage projects efficiently at scale.

  • Stakeholder Communication: Developing the ability to communicate technical solutions to non-technical audiences.

  • Ethical and Professional Conduct: Continuing to uphold honesty, integrity, and accountability in all professional decisions.

Attitudes and Professional Growth

Beyond technical expertise, I recognize that professionalism also involves discipline, adaptability, collaboration, and continuous learning. I aim to embody these qualities to represent USP as an exemplary graduate and contribute effectively to any organization I join.
